When it comes to finding a creative solution to a problem, long-time entrepreneurs Cathy and Rick Scarms are on it. Awhile back Cathy was approached by a good friend asking if she could make a cover for her boxed wine. Her friend and her husband are avid campers. They like the convenience of boxed wine. It is easy to transport and doesn’t roll around in their camper. However, they don’t like the look of the box.
The Scarms agreed and was intrigued by the concept. After giving it some thought, Cathy designed a cover that gave the boxed wine a fun party look. Rick came up with a way to keep the boxed wine chilled for a longer period of time once it was removed from the refrigerator.
Cathy and her husband Rick, a business consultant, liked the end results so much they decided to make more of the covers with different themes to use in their home and at outdoor parties. Taking the concept one step further, Rick suggested wine box covers would be a fun and enterprising business to launch. After doing their homework and tapping into the expertise of some savvy executives in the community the pair came up with “What Wine Box?®”
This hand-crafted product made of fabric is just one in the life of super seamstress Scarms. She once owned a boutique where she created handmade “kurtas.”
In case you don’t remember the 60’s, kurtas are loose Nehru collared shirts and wide leg pants with drawstrings. Comfort a la Indian style. Her customers included George Harrison, The Monkees, The Byrds, Jim Morrison, Buddy Rich and famous Beatle George Harrison. She still makes kurtas (refer to her website www.satpurush.com for more info ) and recently completed an order for the Strawberry Alarm Clock who have reunited and are back on tour.
When she is not making wine box covers, kurtas or totes you’ll find her kicking back with Rick and enjoying life. Cathy enjoys sci-fi movies and playing the piano. The Scarms duo love their desert lifestyle, long road trips and spending time at the dog park with their adorable puppy dog Lucy.
